Fallen Earth & What is an MMO?

So of all the friends I've encountered on FB and elsewhere, I have not run into any who play video games, specifically MMOs. So what is an MMO. MMOs are Massively Multiplayer Online games. If you've ever heard or seen ads for World of Warcraft, well thats one with over 9 million people playing currently. MMOs are unique because you play with people from all over the world, interact with them in the game, chat with them via text or even live through a microphone. I've been online playing and talking to people in Russia, Australia, Japan, Europe, and everywhere in the states ALL AT ONCE! It's a real unique and neat experience.

So why a video game? Well, it's my little hobby. It's what I do when I'm alone. Instead of heading to a bar, or a party, or anything else sure to get me in trouble, I stay at home and play, still getting my social interaction with some cool people. These aren't the types of games many of us older crowd may think of from our youth. They are incredibly in depth and huge in scope. Its literally like living in another world; for me its my alternate universe. So let's talk Fallen Earth.

Fallen Earth is the MMO I am currently playing. I tried it out on a whim, not expecting much, never hearing a thing about it. I fell in love after the first day. Many others who try it say the same thing. It is not highly advertised or promoted, and is being done by a small independant developer, Icarus Studios. Here is their web site .

Fallen Earth is on a single server and set in a post-apocalyptic setting. The setting is the Grand Canyon area of Arizone. Huge open sandbox-type world (unlike the usual on-rails games ala WoW or WAR) this game you can literally go anywhere or do anything. There are no classes but characters have AP (advancement points) to spend in different skills to customize your character the way you want to play. You can spend these points in Stats (base statistics that affect skills), skills (like melee, rifle, pistols, first aid, dodge, etc), or mutations.

Crafting is HUGE. I was never a big crafting fan, never really enjoyed it in other games. This system is highly rewarding and just feels right. Crafting is 'real-time' so crafting a sword might take 10-15 minutes or be speeded up by being in certain facilities. Crafting times also continue while being offline. 95% of the items in the game can be crafted. Armor, weapons, clothing, medicines, foods, even vehicles can be made. I like the vehicle, they are highly time intensive and very rewarding when completed. I recently finished a biodiesel motorcycle and am working towards a dune buggy right now. To make all of the items and than assemble them can take 2-5 days depending. But, like I said, crafting can take place while you're offline or even out continuing your questing.

There are 3 'Sectors' and a level cap of 45 right now. They have already stated the sectors are going to be expanded up to 6 (maybe 9) and a level cap of 150. Keeping the kiddies of WoW out of the game is easy: the game has a steep learning curve, high system requirements, and won't hold your hand. (I should interject here quickly. I played WoW for over 3 years and it does have a sound system. But it has become such an amusement park ride instead of a game, outdated graphics, way too open source and automated, ala mods, and just plain boring. There is no challenge anymore. You only have to go play another game to realize this, but WoW players want other games to be too much like WoW and not enough like themselves. BAH! enough).

There are six factions in the game. Each faction has 2 of the other factions as their allies, 2 as enemies, and one as an arch-enemy. The game is PvE and has many PvP elements as well. End game seems to be more PvP centric as there are not 'raids' or instances. In fact you have to look hard for instancing in this game. There are literally no loading screens anywhere. There are clans (think guilds), auction houses. There is talk of player housing already in development, a thing I think is great as there is so much world out there.

The world is HUGE! It feels huge. Even on a motorcycle it would take hours to get from one end to the other. On foot, who knows..a really long time...days?! They have no fast travel but supposedly is in the works. This has mixed opinions but in the end will be needed, especially once they expand to add more sections. The game is the standard $50 and then $15/month to play. Pretty cheap price for entertainment considering I play for hours each day. One 2-hour movie is more than that.

So yeah, still a kid at heart and play games. I even play the Xbox 360. I have one in my room and my son has one in his room. In fact, my son was the one who introduced me to computer MMOs in the first place. I was solely a console player before that.

Here's a few pictures of my characters at various times in the game and even one with the UI showing.
