Mixed Nuts are the Best Nuts

Been thinking alot about this since coming across it in a recent Facebook spot, even though the mixed nuts referenced something else. But I believe it applies here. Mixed nuts are a foundation of this great country. It's what makes it such a great country. Wherever you go, whatever town, you open a can of mixed nuts. Sure to find a great assortment of colors, shapes, and flavors. We are all a nut among the mix, each unique with our own flavor, shape, texture, and color. Most importantly, we all come from the same can. So it amazes me that people/groups today are still discriminting against other groups based on WHATEVER their current reason or ideology happens to be. It doesn't matter, they are still discriminating, whatever reason they try to hide it behind. We are all nuts mixed in the great can of America. Accept it, embrace it. The only thing clouding others' minds is the beliefs of others and letting their ideology become ours. Create your own beliefs, they ...

A Day at Work

So Saturday's tend to be much slower than a business day but thought I would share the calls I got today: yes, its a slow day and I'm bored so here's a brief 12 hour shift (minus the paperwork in between). Started the shift with 1 officer on, and as many as 3 officers on mid-day, ended with 2 on. Office empty except for me and my imagination. Each of these calls is input into our computer Records Management System by me as well as in our CAD (Computer Aided Dispatch). Almost anyone we come in contact with I also run their license as well as through Wanted Person. rp=reporting party Total phone calls this shift=43 (total texts to my kids=12) 911--Rp reports subject throwing coffee into his vehicle on him and his wife. Officer contacted subject and we will be pursuing assault charges on him. 911--Rp reports hearing several shots fired. Another call, same report. Ended up being a car backfiring at a tire shop. Arrest--officers arrested a subject on an outstandi...

Why Yreka

Yreka (pronounced why- REEka ) is an awesome, quiet, small town. So how did I end up here and what the heck is Yreka ? I was living in Salinas, my hometown, with my mom in the late 80s wondering what the hell to do with myself. My girlfriend at the time mentioned the California Conservation Corps might be up my tree-hugging tree. I checked them out and joined, wanting a location way out there. I was assigned to the CCC in Siskiyou . After my training I hopped into a CCC van and headed north. After Redding , CA, suddenly there were no more signs of people as we headed into thick forests and beautiful mountains. Finally I ended up out at an ole Air Force Base which the CCC had made their home. It sat out in the middle of a beautiful valley all by itself, with Mt Shasta towering over the entire valley. I was in heaven . I worked 2 years with them, climbing into the...

Tom's Tip of the Month: Sweet Aroma

The power of hops is amazing. Such an amazing and powerful aroma from such a beautiful plant. Hops has been used as a natural sedative, relaxer, dream inducer for thousands of years. Want to see for yourself? Head on down to your home brewery shop, possibly even your local greenhouse, depending on where you live; buy a small sack of fresh hops. Make a small sack out of some old material (yes, I sew too); fill the sack with some of hops...start with a small pouch of hops since it can be pretty strong in the beginning; place the sack under your pillow.....WARNING!! hops is a very strong aroma, most people can construe it as offensive because of how strong the smell is; See how much different your sleep is over the next week, how strong your dreams are during that time. Of course your partner will either be sleeping in a different room or probably have chucked the sack after a few days. Fill me in on all the juicy details of your little dream sack. Now, more recently hops is used in alcoh...

Permeating Evil

Sitting in dispatch today thinking about the people our officers have to deal with sometimes and knowing how it can affect them. I worked as a Crime Scene Investigator for about 2 years and came face-to-face with the evils all around us that blindly occur without us realizing. Being a CSI was exciting at first but is nowhere as glamorized as all of the shows make it seem. The key elements missing from the media are the smells and emotions which accompany every scene. Taking pictures of the insides of people's bodies, arriving at a scene moments after something horrible has occurred, talking with young children who should never have to deal with what they were. These are the things that soon became my life, permeated my being, seeped into my dreams and every waking thought. It tears you down, slowly eroding your thoughts and views of people and the world. It happened slowly, never manifesting itself in a noticeable fashion. I never realized the impact of cuddling with my son or daug...

Winter's Approach

Snow gently powdering the mountaintops; leaves falling to their new home; cold winds approaching from the north. All signs of winter fast approaching in the mountains. While winter can be cold it is also one of my favorite times of the year. Outdoor activities are brought inside, family gathered in the living room while cold winds and snow howl outside. We have a woodstove which heats our house and there is nothing like a woodstove heat. It keeps the house so nice and toasty. I still have to split one more cord of wood to complete our stash for the winter. We get our wood from the surrounding forest, taking already down trees or trees dead from past fires. We usually have a nice mix of douglas fir and lodgepole, both which burn nicely. Our house is so well insulated the stove can easily make the house a sauna so the baffles are usually only cracked so the fire is more smoldering than actually burning flames. This also makes the wood let off a even and long-lasting heat. Did I...
